Surviving the first few weeks with a newborn - Emma Fay Photography

Congratulations on your new arrival! The first few weeks with a newborn can be both exciting and challenging. Here are some tips to help you survive and thrive during this time:

  1. Get plenty of rest: Newborns wake frequently during the night and require a lot of attention. Make sure to take naps when your baby is sleeping, and ask for help from friends and family when needed.

  2. Accept help: Don't be afraid to ask for help from family and friends. They can help with cooking, cleaning, and other household chores so that you can focus on your baby.

  3. Establish a routine: While newborns don't have a predictable schedule, try to establish a basic routine that includes feeding, nappy changing, and sleeping. This can help both you and your baby get into a rhythm. However, try not to stress if you aren't in a routine immediately.

  4. Take care of yourself: It's important to take care of your own physical and emotional needs. Eat nutritious food, stay hydrated, and take time for yourself when you can. This could mean something as

simple as a relaxing bath with music, or even just talking a gentle walk.

  1. Simplify your life: Don't try to do too much in the early weeks. Simplify your life by scaling back on activities and commitments, and focus on bonding with your baby.

  2. Connect with other new parents: Join a new parent support group or connect with other new parents online. It can be helpful to talk to others who are going through the same experience.

Remember, it's normal to feel overwhelmed and tired in the early weeks with a newborn. Take it one day at a time, and don't hesitate to reach out for help when you need it.
